Esterase enzyme activity in the posterior mantle edge of the Mediterranean mussel. Esterase activity was determined using 4-Nitrophenyl acetate as the substrate in mantle protein extracts two days (A) and two weeks (B) after water salinity was reduced58. The results are represented as the mean ± SEM of five to six biological replicates that were performed in duplicate. For the two-week group significant differences were identified using a One-Way ANOVA and a Turkey’s multiple comparisons test. The significance cut-off was taken at p < 0.05. Analysis was performed with Prism GraphPad software (7.0). SWF: seawater fed, BWF: brackish water fed; SW: seawater fast; BW: brackish water fast.
