Mapping of α-CA activity in the posterior mantle edge of the mussel. Longitudinal sections of the posterior region of the mantle edge showing α-CA activity in the epithelial cell layer (ep) and in collagen fibres (cf) of the tissue section. A positive reaction (A) was observed in tissue sections incubated with 0.1% BTB and acidified with CO2-saturated ddH2O (pH = 4.4–4.6). The negative control (B) corresponds to a tissue section in which 0.1% BTB was omitted from the reaction. No colour reaction was observed. Photographs were taken 15 min after incubation in acidified CO2-saturated ddH2O (pH = 4.4–4.6) using a digital camera (Leica DFC480) coupled to a Leica DM2000 microscope. Magnification x20.
