Electrostatic interactions of the acidic cluster formed by the side-chains of Asp110, Glu111, and Asp112 with helix α2 residues Arg22 and Gln23 in the crystal structure of LC3C(8–125) (PDB 3WAM14; hydrogen atoms were added with PyMOL). The backbone amide proton of Ile21 forms an N-capping motif with the side-chain hydroxyl oxygen of phosphorylation target Ser18 (dashed line).
