From: The influence of initial developmental status on the life-history of sea trout (Salmo trutta)

Morphological characteristics

Parr

Light to yellowish body coloration, no silvering of scales, red spots, yellow to brownish-orange fin color, and parr marks are clearly present.

Pre-smolt

Parr marks almost completely obscured by the silvery appearance of the scales, receding red spots, and fish are relatively thinner in appearance than parr.

Smolt

Absence of parr marks, almost fully silvering of scales, no red spots, darkened fins, and fish are slender in appearance than parr and pre-smolts. The head is more pointed.
