Experimental setup. The red dashed line indicates the anatomical region of interest which also coincides with the sensitive region of the 129Xe surface coil. Following pentobarbital anaesthesia, mice were intubated, mechanically ventilated, and placed on a small animal cradle. MR-compatible electrocardiogram (ECG) and rectal probes were used to monitor animal physiology during the experiment, while a second temperature probe was placed next to the animal to monitor bore temperature and provide a feedback to the forced-heated-air temperature controller. Pentobarbital and norepinephrine injections were administered in situ via intraperitoneal (IP) and subcutaneous (SC) catheters, respectively, attached to lines running out of the magnet bore to syringes.
