Each dot represents a single bacterial cell. The colours represent a density scale from purple/blue (low) to red (high cell density). The quadrants represent the different fractions of the population: Q1: reversible permeabilized, Q2: irreversible permeabilized and Q4: unaffected intact membrane. These density plots are presented as an example from one of the experiments of which the results are presented in Fig. 2C.
