  1. The concentrations of cytokines (pg/ml) were measured in the platelet poor plasma (n = 6–10/group) collected at the end of the study using a cytometric bead assay. NO metabolites were assessed by the Griess assay. Data expressed as mean ± standard error of mean (SEM) and analysed by student’s t-test. P values are for two-way comparisons between the 1-stage and 2-stage HLI models. Statistical significance considered as P value ≤0.05. (*)  = ≤0.05, 2-stage HLI compared to 1-stage HLI; ($)  = <0.001, 1-stage HLI compared to shams. Abbreviations: IL, Interleukin; IFN, Interferon; MCP, Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein; NO, total nitrite and nitrate metabolites; TNF; Tumour Necrosis Factor.
