The municipalities of Fukushima prefecture are grouped into six areas differing in radiation levels. In deciding how to divide the prefecture, we also ensure that the child population size in each area is large enough to contain a reasonable number of thyroid cancer cases. These areas serve as a basis for studying the relationship between the incidence of thyroid cancer and the amounts of radiation. Iwaki city is classified as an area of its own given its relatively large child population and amounts of 131I. The white spot in this map is Lake Inawashiro. The identification numbers assigned to the six areas are in order of radiation levels.
