Each sub-panel corresponds to a different participant with, in blue, the histogram of the reported confidence, and in orange, the one from the model. For clarity we plot the blue and orange bars side by side, but the bins of the histograms are, by construction, identical. (b) Transfer function F for each participant. The x-axis denotes the difference in neural pools activities Δr at the time of the decision, and the y-axis the cumulative distribution of Δr. Each point represents the levels of Δr delimiting the level of confidence (from left to right, confidence level 0 to confidence level 9). The dashed colored curve is the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the light blue dashed curve is the fit of the CDF by a sigmoid.
