Points show the oxygen saturation in the four upper aggregates (inset; optode foil image) during the time course of one parabola at 0 g, for a pore network without (A) and with (B) bacteria. The black curve depicts the gravity experienced during the same period. Oxygen saturation remains constant in the absence of bacteria, but rapid development of anoxic conditions occurs in all four hotspots in the presence of the two bacterial species. Measurements used to quantify oxygen reduction in Fig. 4 are shown by yellow markers.
