Transmission electron micrographs of L. plantarum phage Silenus. In (ab), triangles indicate the neck passage structure with (faint) whisker structures (see stars). Open arrows in (cd) highlight the characteristic double-disc baseplate structure at the distal end of the flexible, non-contractile tail. Single arrows in (c, d) show representative short flexible appendages (with tiny terminal globular structures) attached under the baseplate structure. The observed morphology classifies phage Silenus to the family Siphoviridae.
