Panel A shows an example of primarily vertical movement due to a zone of reduced permeability near to the toe. Panel B shows an example of horizontal movement of seawater, such as along a high-permeability conduit located near to the base of the aquifer. Panel C shows an example of both horizontal and vertical movement inland, as would be found in a homogeneous aquifer.
