Standard deviation by month for each model in CMIP5 (blue) and CMIP6 (orange) for (a) DMI, and (b) Niño3.4, an index for IOD and ENSO, respectively during 1850–2005 for models and during 1951–2018 for observations. Both are sorted by the strength of the IOD in ascending order, with strength represented as standard deviation of the index. HadISST and NOAA ERSSTv5 observations shown in bold, to help show models which underestimate and overestimate the IOD.
