  1. Patients with COPD were recruited by the Department of Pulmonology and Urology at Pedro Ernesto University Hospital. Patients with COPD had to have a forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) of between 30 and 80% predicted, were aged 50 or over, and had a spirometry-proven diagnosis of COPD and a smoking burden of more than 20 pack-years. An obstructive pulmonary disorder corresponds to an FEV1 (forced first–second expiratory volume)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio of less than 0.7 after the use of salbutamol 400 µg. The control group comprised individuals aged 50 or over, with normal spirometry and chest X-ray results and no airflow obstructions.
