Carotenes-forming enzymatic reactions in fungi and bacteria. Desaturation and cyclisation steps are presented as vertical or horizontal arrows, respectively. The number following the capital I letter in the desaturation reactions corresponds to the supplementary number of double bonds relative to phytoene. The colours associated with the molecules were arbitrarily chosen and are reused throughout the article. The molecular details and absorbance data of the presented molecules are recapitulated in the Supplementary Table S1.
