Phosphorylation hourglass and activity switch of phosphoproteins: (A) As an example, the FRQ protein is stabilized by FRH and undergoes multiple phosphorylations by CK1a. FFC complex interacts with WCC. A phosphoswitch governs the activity status of the complex. (B) The solid line represents the simulated phosphorylations in Fig. 7 and suggests a slow and saturated phosphorylation. The dashed line represents the simulated switch induced by hyperphosphorylated protein (compare Fig. 7).
