Modeling a delayed switch based on multiple phosphorylations: The simulations start with unphosphorylated protein F. The normalized total number of Fk with \( \hbox {k}=1,\ldots ,4 \) phosphorylations increases with time delays and hyperphosphorylated species (such as \(\hbox {n} = 4\)) accumulate in an ultrasensitive, switch-like manner.
