(A) Time waveform (top) and spectrogram (bottom) of a single human speaker producing the sustained vowels: /a/ /i/ /u/, as in “father”, “eat”, and “goose” respectively (made in Sonic Visualiser51). To prepare vowels for psychoacoustic tests, the middle section of a sustained vowel was extracted and given a 5 ms cosine rise/fall time.
