Evolution of cross-sectional area (CSA) and normalized average pixel value (APV) of pretreated biomass beds by feedstock and method of pretreatment. APV of the biomass bed is temporally normalised by that of the cell void space. Samples were pyrolysed by a 3 L min−1 stream of pre-heated argon at a rate of 6 °C min−1, followed by a 30-min hold time at peak temperature.
