Experimental protocols. In the experience phase, on each day the birds could access one of the compartments (A, B or C) under either condition X or Y. In Experiment 1 of Raby et al.9 and in Experiment 2 of the present study, condition X means that no food is provided, while condition Y means that food is provided (or the other way around). In Experiment 2 of Raby et al.9 and in Experiment 1 of the present study, condition X means that a specific type of food is provided, while condition Y means that a different type of food is provided. In the protocol of Raby et al.9, each compartment is always experienced under the same condition. In the study reported here, each compartment is experienced under both conditions. Note that in the figure, the two experimental compartments for the protocol of Raby et al.9 are labelled as ‘A’ and ‘C’ (rather than as ‘A’ and ‘B’) to ensure consistency with the original paper.
