Osteonecrosis induced by tooth extraction and zoledronate administration is significantly blocked by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. (a) Experimental protocol. (b, c) Loxoprofen sodium hydrate and Meloxicam (15 mg/kg/day), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or a Vehicle (control) water was administered by intraperitoneally a day before and 6 days after surgery for a total of 1 week. Six weeks after extraction, alveolar bone sections from the right mandible were prepared and stained with HE, and the proportion of empty lacunae among all lacunae was calculated. Scale bars = 100 (upper) or 20 μm (lower) panels. Data shows mean percentage (%) of empty lacunae ± SD (n = 5 each, ***P < 0.001, by a Mann–Whitney test). Representative data are shown of at least two independent and identical experiments, each with n = 5.
