Horizontal (a) and vertical (b) movement for surface adhesion. Horizontal strategy implies collective directional motion mainly in the horizontal layer with gradual slow sedimentation and a non-uniform ‘row’ pattern of adhesion close to surface irregularities. Vertical strategy implies non-directional motion in the mainly vertical direction and uniformly distributed adhesion patterns.
