Probiotic administration at a low dose decreases intestinal microbiota diversity. Alpha diversity was determined by Faith PD Whole Tree and Observed OTUs in hamsters treated with a high dose (purple) or low dose (blue) of the probiotic and in placebo-treated hamsters (orange). No differences within groups were observed, thus groups were collapsed across time points. Both Faith PD (a) and Observed OTUs (b) indicated that hamsters given a low dose of the probiotic (blue) had lower diversity than did hamsters given a high dose (purple) or placebo (orange). *denotes p < 0.05; **denotes p ≤ 0.01; ***denotes p ≤ 0.001.
