Investigating cerebrocortical structure across species, size and time. (a) Using MRI in human and rodent studies, findings between species with the same imaging modality can be directly translated. Explorative whole brain studies identify key regions which can be further investigated by microscopy studies in mice, revealing specific cellular mechanisms for large-scale structural observations. (b) MRI and 2Pii allow for repetitive imaging in vivo and therefore capture dynamics of brain structure in individual animals. The imaging intervals were precisely defined in each mouse (time points given in black), while the corresponding age of the mice may differ ± 1 week due to the staggered experimental design.
