Figure 2

Matching of pairs of patients with high vs. low educational attainment used to control for potential confoundings. (A) Mahalanobis distances of pairs of patients with high vs. low educational attainment after multi-dimensional matching for lesion size, age, and sex. The broken line indicates the bend in distances after selected 52 pairs. The individual 52 pairs of patients with high vs. low educational attainment were comparable in lesion size (B) and age (C) as the multi-dimensional matching approach yielded both a minimized between-group difference (one-way ANOVA) and a maximized variance homogeneity (Levene’s test) between groups. Individual pairs are connected by gray lines. (D) Lesion distribution and overlap for patients with high and low educational attainment: Both groups were comparable in their lesion load (Liebermeister test, pFDR < 0.05). Colors indicate the lesion overlap. MNI z-coordinates are given for the slices. The figure was created using Matlab software, version 2018a https://www.mathworks.com/products/matlab.html and MRIcron, version 12.12.2012 https://www.nitrc.org/projects/mricron.
