Schematic representation of the composition of an avalanche signal in acoustic emission experiments. The size of the sample and the detector is some 5 mm, the detector covers often a large part of the sample. During local switching, an avalanche with V(t) emits a strain signal (i.e. the source function) which propagates through the sample and is eventually measured by the detector. During the propagation, the signal generates the ringing of the sample and is modified by elastic wave reflections on surfaces, scattering on lattice imperfections. The profile of a source delta function would generate T(t), the so-called transfer function. The measured AE profile AAE(t) is described in this paper as the convolution of the source function with the transfer function.
