δ18OSC (solid) and Suess-adjusted δ13CSC (open) of individual annual dentine growth layer groups (GLGs) of teeth from killer whales that stranded in the eastern Canadian Arctic (ECA; turquoise circles) and the Northwest Atlantic (NWA; purple squares). Values are standardized to that of the first GLG. Higher within-tooth δ18OSC variation indicates greater interannual variability in distribution. Although dietary influences on δ13CSC cannot be constrained, concurrent (often inverse) variation in δ13CSC with δ18OSC in most of the profiles is consistent with patterns exhibited in the North Atlantic δ18O and δ13C isoscapes19.
