Protein expression of ACE2 in different cell phenotypes. (a-c) Representative images of IHC staining of the myocardium from an organ donor showing ACE2 expressing cells between cTnT + cardiomyocytes. ACE2 staining did not overlap with the expression of cTnT. (d-f) cTnT + /ACE2 + cells were identified in the myocardium from three individuals with terminal heart failure, showing ACE2 expression in cardiomyocytes. (g) In the HF group, most of the ACE2 + cells were cardiomyocytes. (h, i) Enlargement of ACE2 + /cTnT + cardiomyocytes surrounded by the Te7 + fibroblasts. (j) For the most part, ACE2 staining did not overlap with the CD31 endothelial staining in either of the groups. ACE2 + /CD31 + cells could be found (arrows), (see Suppl. Figure 3 for more details).
