Mouse lung tissue pathology after IAV infection. CS exposure, early or late IFN-β administration and IAV infection are the same as Fig. 2A. Each mouse was infected with 500 PFU of IAV PR8. Animals were sacrificed at 5 days after infection and lung tissue was harvested. Lung tissue sections prepared from the infected mice were fixed, processed and stained with hematoxylin–eosin (A). Histopathologic evaluation and scoring of IAV infection were determined by a blinded pathologist (B). The lungs of 5 mice from each treatment group were processed for histology, and results shown were typical for the group. The arrows indicate infiltrated neutrophils, edema or hemorrhage.
