From: EF-hand protein, EfhP, specifically binds Ca2+ and mediates Ca2+ regulation of virulence in a human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Figure 2

The role of efhP in P. aeruginosa PAO1 virulence. (A) Survival of P. aeruginosa PAO1 and ΔefhP in J774A.1 murine macrophages. Intracellular survival was measured 90 min after infection by using a gentamycin exclusion assay. Each number corresponds to the average of three technical replicates, each experiment was repeated three times on three different days. (*) Student’s T-test p < 0.05 (B) Percent survival of G. mellonella injected with 2–5 CFU of PAO1 and ΔefhP grown at no added CaCl2 (empty symbols) or at 5 mM CaCl2 (filled symbols). Cells were grown in BMM with the corresponding level of CaCl2. Every data point represents an individual experiment. Each experiment used 10 experimental and five control animals. (*) One-way ANOVA p < 0.05 (C) Pyocyanin production during growth on agar surface of PAO1, ΔefhP, ΔefhP::efhP_q and ΔefhP::efhP. (*) Univariate ANOVA p < 0.05.
