Effect of the muscle physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) on the transversal MUAP amplitude distribution. Red circles represent the territories of two MUs located at the same depth (d) in two muscles with different PCSA. Right muscle (small PCSA): the distance between active fibers and the skin surface is similar for all the skin locations, leading to a uniform MUAP amplitude distribution across the detecting electrodes. Left muscle (large PCSA): the distance between active fibers and the skin surface changes for different skin locations, leading to a more localized amplitude distribution.
