Combinations (personal vs. physical) were compared across an operant and an observant condition (operant-personal, operant-physical, observant-personal, operant-physical). (b) Factors for Experiment #2 are depicted on the right. Participants saw the identical stimulus across all trials. The cover story was systematically varied across experimental blocks. The resulting combinations during blocks were operant-confederate, observant-confederate, operant-computer, and observant-computer.
