Schematic representation of the experimental procedure. (a) Freshly prepared oligopeptide films were first characterized by means of DINeC-MS. (b) Samples were then irradiated with 946 MeV Au ions at GSI, leading to cleavage of covalent bonds in the molecules. (c) Subsequent DINeC analysis of the irradiated samples reveals SHI-induced fragments which remain in the sample and have not been sputtered during SHI-irradiation. Schematics are not to scale.
