The cognate nucleotide insertion opposite to l-dC and dC by Taq DNA polymerase and Vent DNA polymerases. Taq DNA polymerase can bypass dC (a) but not bypass l-dC (b). Vent DNA polymerase can bypass not only dC (c) but also l-dC (d). Nucleotide pairs were shown in green, neighbouring amino acid residues were shown in red.
