Misinformation proliferates in segregated networks. (A) Percentage of sharing decisions involving a false message in both network conditions. Each shaded circle represents one network. Consistent with our argument, we find that network segregation systematically increases the fraction of misinformation in the population (one-sided randomization test: ATE = 7.2%, p = 0.012, N = 16). (B) Difference in number of adopters between segregated and integrated networks by the messages’ baseline sharing probability (vertical lines denote corresponding 95% confidence intervals). The color shade indicates the fraction of false messages at different levels of sharing probability.
