Simplified schematic representation of the vertical gradient freeze method applied to the seed crystal filled with dopant powder. While applying a steep temperature gradient, the top of the crystal melts and becomes a liquid while the bottom remains solid. By slowly cooling and moving the melting interface upwards, a doped single crystal can be grown on the seed crystal.
