Sphericity of 120 alveoli in the live lungs and 120 alveoli in the fixed lungs. \(\mathrm{\varphi }\) is the sphericity of individual alveoli (\(\mathrm{\varphi }\) of the sphere = 1). \(\mathrm{\varphi }\) = 0.90 ± 0.02 (mean ± s.d.) for the live lungs and \(\mathrm{\varphi }\) = 0.79 ± 0.04 (mean ± s.d.) for the fixed lungs were taken from x-ray microtomography (P-value = 2.8 × 10–67). Every single measurement is not from the same alveolus.
