Vcube: volume of the cubes in the lung (μm3) and Vairspace: volume of the airspace inside the cubes (μm3), ϕ: alveolar volume fraction of the cubes, defined as ϕ = Vairspace/Vcube and measured as ϕ = 0.66 ± 0.02 (mean ± s.d.) for the live lung and ϕ = 0.85 ± 0.03 (mean ± s.d.) for the fixed lung.
