On each trial, participants were shown an image for 500 ms followed by a prompt to categorize the emotion displayed in the image using one of nine options. This was followed by prompts to obtain intensity and genuineness ratings using a 9-point scale. Each participant completed 50 WFD trials, 50 ED trials and 50 US trials per block (each participant viewed 1–3 unique blocks).
