Mean signal intensity (a) and area covered by bacteria (%) (b) of biofilm growth, in vivo, on splints, postinsertion, evaluated by CLSM. Pieces of ZnCl2-coated splints from three patients’ noses (the treatment patients) and non-ZnCl2-coated splints from the noses of two patients who were given prophylactic antibiotics (the negative growth control) were stained with PI for CLSM evaluation. The splint pieces were evaluated for the mean signal intensity, quantifying the amount of bacterial growth onto the splint’s surface (a) and the area covered by bacterial growth (%) in each piece (b). The results that are not significantly different from each other according to Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) test are grouped under the same letter (p < 0.05).
