Ectopic endometrial tissue formation by the transplantation of small uterine pieces. (A) Small uterine fragments from a donor mouse were transplanted at four sites (yellow arrowheads) on the peritoneum of a recipient mouse. (B) Orange arrowheads indicate the cystic lesions that formed at the transplant sites 2 weeks after transplantation. (C,D) Microscopic photographs of the same cystic lesion by hematoxylin & eosin (HE) staining (C, 40) and Pax8 immunostaining (D, 40× and 200×). The cystic lesion is lined by a single layer of a Pax8-positive columnar epithelium (light blue arrow), indicating the formation of an ectopic endometrium (endometriosis).
