From: Subsea permafrost organic carbon stocks are large and of dominantly low reactivity

Total organic carbon content within subsea permafrost at pre-industrial time. The map shows the total amount of OC, summed over the sediment that accumulated within the last 450 kyr. OM decomposition was permitted in the liquid water volume of the sediment column, even at cryotic temperatures, with median terrestrial and marine sediment OC burial rates and OM reactivity parameters of \(a={50}\,\text{yr}\) and \(\nu = 0.15\) for marine and \(a={0.25}\,\text{yr}\) and \(\nu = 0.003\) for terrestrial deposits. Locations where subsea permafrost was not present at pre-industrial time are excluded.
