Illustration of the nested k-fold cross-validation scheme used in the experiments. The outer loop, which consists of four folds, evaluates the performance of the model by iteratively evaluating one fold as test data. Within each iteration of the outer loop, an inner two-fold cross-validation is performed on the training data from the other loop to estimate the optimal hyperparameters.
