Schematic presentation of the synthesis routes used for the fabrication of carboxylated, QD-loaded polystyrene microparticles (PSMPs). (i) QD incorporation during the polymerization reaction (polymerization procedure) and (iia). preparation of unstained PSMPs followed by (iib) QD staining via a post-synthetic swelling procedure of the beads through addition of an organic solvent like butanol in presence of the QDs.
