Time lags between significant trends in surveillance data (confirmed cases and hospitalization) relative to significant trends in Google Trends and the combination of Google Trends plus Twitter during the time period February 2020 to February 2022. A negative difference shown on the x axis indicates that a significant trend in one of the digital traces preceded the observed trends in confirmed cases and hospitalization, respectively. Median time lag of confirmed cases versus Google Trends: 15 days; confirmed cases vs. Combined trace: 15 days; hospitalization versus Google Trends: 1 day; hospitalization versus Combined trace: 6 day. The number of days have been counted from the end of each sliding window.
