(a). Ultrasound image acquired by placing the linear transducer directly over surface of the left kidney. The 20 g IV can be seen in long axis with the tip of the oxygen sensor extending out into renal medullary tissue. (b). Ultrasound image acquired by placing the linear transducer over the skin of the left flank just below the last rib. Subcutaneous muscle and fat are seen overlying the surface of the kidney. This area was marked and a near infra-red spectroscopy sensor was placed on the skin in this location.
