A realisation of the stochastic process tracking the progeny of a single progenitor cell which starts in compartment \(C_1\). The cell tracked (see Section “Lifeline analysis”) is shown as striped. Whenever the tracked cell divides, we follow one of the daughter cells selected at random (see division in \(C_3\)). For each cell, the colour indicates the compartment where it is at any given time. Here, the tracked cell dies in \(C_3\) (brown), while its progeny continues up to \(C_4\). In this example, \(G_1 = 8 = G_1(1)+G_1(2)+G_1(3)+G_1(4)=4+0+2+2\).
