The importance of humidity. (a) Larger beetles occur in drier environments with less vegetation cover. (b) Beetles possessing highly efficient chiral structures (degree of left-hand circular polarization) occur in more humid environments. However, this result is not supported by more complex models including the interaction terms (see supplementary table S5). The plots show the mean and standard deviation (error bars) for each variable, with the negative of PC1 plotted in the x-axis for easier interpretation. Trend lines were generated from PGLS model estimates, and each data point is labeled with a species code, which is referenced in the supplementary materials.
