Measurement

Characteristics

MRC scale of muscle strength

M0: no muscle contraction.

M1: Muscle contraction but not against gravity.

M2: Muscle can move the joint through its full range of motion against gravity, but not against any resistance.

M3: Muscle contraction against gravity with slight resistance.

M4: Muscle contraction against gravity with moderate resistance.

M5: Normal muscle contraction with full resistance.

MRC scale of sensory recovery

S0: No sensation in the autonomous zone of the nerve.

S1: Recovery of deep cutaneous pain and pressure sensation.

S2: Recovery of some superficial pain and tactile sensation without correct localization.

S3: Recovery of superficial pain and tactile sensation with over-response or misinterpretation.

S3+: Good recovery of touch and pinprick sensation, with accurate localization and mild hyperesthesia.

S4: Complete recovery of normal sensation
