Set-up for toy model calculation. (a) The output of a Fabry-Pérot cavity setup is homodyned with a local oscillator. (b) Additionally, the local oscillator is transmitted through the same non-length-stabilized cavity picking up the phase shift of the detuned cavity. For both cases, we analyze the possible precision in estimating the phase shift imprinted by a thin lossless sample inside the cavity.
